Being injured doesn’t mean you can’t move!

Not acutely injured, no, but if in recovery phase, I’m confident working with clients and knowing how to adapt the movements according to what’s happening.

HIP LIFT or HIP ROLL

Another one of those 'to do often' moves! Also known as bridge. 

This photo was taken during an Irish heatwave! About 28 degrees! Roll on spring; one week of January over!! 

I remember the contact of my toes and feet on the stone so that I could really feel backs of upper legs (hamstrings). Thighs are pushing up against my hands. Reaching knees away.

You either articulate or roll spine from mat from tailbone up OR push to lift pelvis straight up. Keep ribcage from popping- keep connection to hips on front body. Warm up feet and legs first or cramps may strike.

MOVE YOUR SPINE EVERYDAY!

In a few short minutes, wherever you are, you can flex and extend the spine from standing. Cat/cow.... more usually done from all fours, but handy to do from standing if short of space, time or if injured! 

Knees bent, with long neutral spine, curl tailbone to open up the vertebrae at the back of spine while shortening the muscles at the front. And curve the other way or extend, opening the bones of spine the other direction. 

Now ready for some standing thoracic rotation, feel the thorax twist and breathe into ribcage nice and big. (Video sped up).

Nollaig na mBan (Little Christmas or Feast of the Epiphany) for me signals the real start of the New Year! 

Studio and group mat classes resume in a few weeks (... later start due to my shoulder surgery). 

Online classes available anytime via website; free two-week trial. No excuse not to get moving this January. 

Of course, walking is great, it's free and SO good for you!! (No such thing as bad weather; just inappropriate clothing).

Emails sent to existing client so please check your inbox! If you haven't received and think you should have, get in touch ASAP!

Along with SQUATS and STANDING ON ONE LEG, SPINAL ROTATION is another vital move to do regularly. Daily is great, but if you manage a few times a week, it's still good 😉

Feet stay on ground here, so minimal spinal load but - still - listen to your own body and never force your twist. Beneficial for most people if you keep it gentle and unloaded. 

Our spines are designed to move. Movement nourishes, hydrates and makes you feel better. 

As you get stronger, you'd progress to thighs in towards chest with feet lifted off ground (if you have osteoporosis however, keep feet down and move within small range).
